These days, it seems as though everybody is talking about overweight and obesity. Why is it such a big deal?

One in three children is considered obese or overweight as reported by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Overweight children tend to become overweight adults – 70-80% of overweight adolescents become overweight adults. This condition has significant impacts on social, emotional, and physical health of children and adults.

As a parent, you can learn about ENERGY BALANCE (PDF), and help your child(ren) make smart food choices and be physically active.

What is Energy Balance?

What you eat and drink is ENERGY IN. What you burn through physical activity is ENERGY OUT. We use this energy for simple everyday movements like breathing and digesting our food, and we also use energy for physical activities like walking or running. Your ENERGY IN and OUT don't have to balance exactly every day – it's the balance over time that is important.

Together with Kohl's Department Stores, Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital aims to educate families about eating healthy and engaging in regular physical activity. Through the Kohl's Healthy Choices for Healthy Families program, families have access to FREE online resources including portion size guides, dining out tips, healthy family snack and meal recipes, and trackers that can be used to set family goals around nutrition and physical activity.

“Great job with nrg. As a parent, I am thankful my daughter has participated in multiple "nrg" events; it has made a difference. Thank you for leading such an important charge!”
